I am interested in exploring the element of time and how it affects every physical object, living and non-living. I recently chose to use organic forms like fossils, plants, and shells as a visual vocabulary for my work. My initial interest in these forms is in their inherent beauty and formal qualities. After further exploration, I realized these forms have the potential to convey a variety of ideas. I am especially interested in using these forms to suggest change, ephemerality, fragility, and resilience. Throughout history, humanity has tried to a measure and quantify time. We have cyclical indications of time, such as the change of the seasons and repetition of day and night. We are also surrounded by evidence that time is linear with the aging of our bodies. In these paintings, a transparent layering of paint is used to emulate a build up of material similar to the process of sedimentation; images and objects beneath the surface are connections to the past and represent history.
